Would you like to be a Flying Scientist this year?

Take part in the Flying Scientists: Engaging Rural Queenslanders in Science program for the 2025-2026 financial year.

Despite having a relatively decentralised population with strong regional centres, the majority of science related events are hosted in Southeast Queensland.

As a result, students and community members in regional and remote Queensland have limited exposure to science and scientists firsthand and are therefore less likely to choose science as a career path.

We are working towards increasing the level of science engagement and participation in Queensland and would like your help in spreading the word about science and science careers.

Details of the program

You will be required to travel (generally an overnight stay) to a regional/remote area in Queensland to engage with school students and community members (even the local media) about your exciting scientific research and what it is like to be a STEM professional.

In 2024-2025, Flying Scientists travelled to Gladstone, Weipa, Mount Isa, Goondiwindi, Charters Towers, Townsville, Chinchilla, Roma and Eromanga.

In most cases, you will travel alongside a Wonder of Science Young Science Ambassador. Those ambassadors are knowledgeable, enthusiastic and passionate science communicators who are able to mentor both students and teachers. We see you as having these characteristics too, so your support will add to the impact these young people have on students and families in rural communities.

The Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation works in collaboration with Wonder of Science to arrange and fund your travel and accommodation. You will also be invited to participate in a half day professional development session to support you in your role as a Flying Scientist.

We anticipate the program will be delivered in school terms in the 2025-2026 financial year.

This is a fantastic opportunity for your career development and will assist us in spreading the word about the great science taking place in Queensland.

Please register your interest by 4pm Friday 13 June 2025.
